CUPID'S ARROW: In which I profess my love for a land down under

I went to Australia, but I was not allowed to touch these vicious koalas.

That's right. AUSTRALIA. So if you know me or my (not so) mysterious alter ego at all, you know that I am a girl who gets around (*ahem* in a traveling sense, thank you very much). So of course I've been to Australia and of course it was epic and fabulous and so when Tez of Tez Says fame shot an arrow inviting me to profess my love for Australia, I grabbed that sucker right out of the air.

Sadly, I just got home from an epic journey across Scandinavia and all attempts to humiliate myself by singing were thwarted by my lack of time and skills, as well as my not-quite-smart-enough phone. Next time, people, I will have the technology. Or something.

Anyhoo, you will just have to imagine me singing the lyrics to this fine song I wrote about Australia. (Think of a very bad violin player accompanying 2 bullfrogs croaking and a smattering of brawling tomcats and you'll be getting close).

AUSTRALIAN THINGS
(sung to the tune of Rodgers's and Hammerstein's MY FAVORITE THINGS)

Men at Work, Midnight Oil, Silverchair too
Pitch Perfect's Fat Amy and the digeridoo
Actor Daniel Lissing--I've heard that he sings
These are my favorite Australian things.

Koalas and devils, wombats who need huggage
The good folks at Qantas who found my lost luggage
Christmas in summer and the fun that it brings
These are my favorite Australian things.

When the croc bites,
When jellies sting,
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember Australian things
And then I don't feel so bad.

Guys with hot accents playing rugby and cricket
Larrikinism instead of a ticket
Prawns on the barbie and Tanzanite rings
These are my favorite Australian things.

When the croc bites,
When jellies sting,
When I'm feeling blue,
I simply remember Australian things
And then I know what to do.
PLAN A TRIP! :)

No fake crocodiles (or silly writers) were injured during the creation of this arrow.

Thanks for the arrow, Tez. Keep those arrows coming, people :)

Thanks for sharing with everyone your favourite Australian things. Whereabouts in Oz did you visit?

    1. In 2009 I went on an Australia/NZ cruise after I graduated from nursing school so I only got to spend a day in Sydney, a day in Melbourne, and a day in Tasmania (where I met all the snuggly animals at the Wings Wildlife Sanctuary). But 3 days was more than enough for me to fall in love with the place :) It's definitely on my return list.

And I dunno how you feel about Qantas (we Americans tend to have not-so-nice stuff to say about our airlines) but after an American company didn't get my luggage on the plane to Sydney, Qantas tracked it down, got it sent to Tasmania, and drove it from the Tazzie airport all the way across to the cruise port--hundreds of kilometers, I believe. They made it just in time before the boat went to sea for 3 more days and I cried when I saw it because I was so happy to have clean clothes. Australia ROCKED. It was beautiful. Everyone was hilarious and kind. And Qantas are my freaking heroes :)

  2. Heehee, I love your song, Paula! I was very tempted to sing it out loud in the office, but I don't think my coworkers would appreciate that ;) Australia was already on my places-to-go list, but clearly I need to make it a priority!

    2. Plus I consider sort of a public service to introduce people who didn't watch Last Resort to Daniel Lissing. Best fake Navy SEAL ever ;)

    1. Yay. Thanks Emily :) Though I am forever in awe of some of the earlier ones. One day I will have my own epic ballad rap crayon drawing masterpiece, or something :)
